Grave Before Shave Beard Oil Review

review of grave before shave beard oil

Grave Before Shave is a brand from Fisticuffs, a Los Angeles based company that does things a bit differently than many of its competitors. To start, each product has its own unique logo that draws inspiration from the motorcycle club culture of Southern California.

Additionally, they've come up with close to 10 different scents of beard oil! Our crew of bearded dudes gave them a try, lets take a look at what they had to say:

Quick Review:

All-in-all this a quality beard oil that most guys will be pleased with. If you are giving a gift, their sampler pack is a great choice. It looks pretty cool with all the different logos and bottles and it provides an opportunity to find your favorite scent.

For the average guy, this is going to be all the beard oil you need. But, if you have a wiry beard and your number one goal is to get your beard as soft as possible, we'd suggest that you check out all our Beard Oil Reviews to find an alternative.

Our Full Review

We gave the line of Beard Oils from Grave Before Shave a thorough run down to see how they stacked up against the competition. We've started to notice that guys with thick beards or really coarse bears often times have slightly different feedback than other panelists and that's the case here. The grades shown are a consensus, but the notes should help provide some more detail.

*A note about our review process: We ask our panel to consider many aspects of each product. However, only factors tied to performance or cost are used to determine the overall score.

Branding and Product Design

Without any doubt, Grave Before Shave's branding game is strong and frankly, we think it is pretty badass!

Each one of the scent variations has its own hand drawn custom logo, each cooler than the last. Its Biker combined with Rock-A-Billy combined with Viking god.

Blend of Ingredients

In many beard products it feels like ingredients were just thrown together or they have a bunch of ingredients just to justify a higher cost, so its nice to see a company come up with a blend that is complex and yet each component supports the next.

Grave Before Shave uses Jojoba Oil and Tea Tree Oil as its primary Carrier Oils, and then combines them with complimenting ingredients like Aloe Vera and Sweet Almond Oil, which both lend help in soothing the skin beneath your beard.

Level of Effectiveness

This is a situation where the type of beard you have is going to determine if this is the right blend for you. If you generally describe your beard as really thick, really long, or really dry, then you probably would be better suited with an oil that isn't as heavy.

Our testers with shorter "corporate beards" (2 inches or less) all seemed to enjoy using Grave Before Shave and had no complaints. While no one demanded to name it the Number 1 brand, no one complained about it either. It worked for them, and thats about all that matters right?

Scent Profile

Are the sweet and intoxicating aroma of Bourbon Barrels your thing? Or maybe you prefer the alluring draw of Mocha and Coffee. No wait, you're a Pine Scented guy? Cigars?

If you can't find a scent that you like in this line, then you probably can't find one you like period. Our testers liked the Cigar and "OG" Original Blends the best, but the Bay Rum got a good bit of love as well. The Pine scent was pretty much what you'd expect it to be.

Cost per Ounce.

At the time of testing, this was being sold on Amazon for $12.49 per once ounce bottle, which is a pretty affordable rate. While there are some brands that charge less than $10 an ounce, there are other that charge over $20, so they are right in the comfortable middle.
